A Complete List of MLB Teams

Things have changed drastically since its inception, and throughout the years, a multitude of players have taken to the fields to play the game.

So, who are the active MLB teams today, and who are their players?

How Many Players Make An MLB Team?

Each Major League Baseball (MLB) team is made up of two rosters – a 25-man and a 40-man.

The 25-man roster is the main MLB team that goes on to play major games, and all players that make up this roster are on a major league contract.

The 40-man roster is composed of the 25-man roster, plus the remaining 15 players (minor league players) or players that are on injured reserve.

Anyone who makes up this roster can be called to play on the main 25 roster.

How Many MLB Teams Are There?

There are 30 MLB teams, and these are divided into several categories: American League Central, American League East, American League West, National League Central, National League East, and National League West. Each of these categories is comprised of five teams.

Below, we’ll take a closer look at the teams in each subdivision and explore their history and some of the most important facts you need to know.

Note: This information was correct at the time of writing. More information on MLB teams can be found on the ESPN website.

A Complete List of MLB Teams

MLB Fun Facts

  • The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first Major League Baseball team
  • The first black MLB player was Jackie Robinson
  • The peak of MLB attendance was in 2007. However, attendance has been gradually declining since

The Old And New MLB Stadiums

To date, the newest MLB stadium is the Globe Life Field, famously the home of the Texas Rangers in Arlington.

The oldest MLB stadium was opened for the 1912 season, and it’s the home of the Boston Red Sox – Fenway Park, Massachusetts.

Although Fenway Park is the oldest MLB stadium in existence, it’s closely followed by the home of the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field, which opened in 1914.

MLB Stadium Seating Capacity

Despite MLB attendance declining, the seating capacity of some of its most infamous stadiums just goes to show how popular the game once was and still is.

The Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, has the most seating capacity of any MLB stadium, with the capacity to seat approximately 56,000 fans.

The MLB stadium with the lowest seating capacity is Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida – the Tampa Bay Rays home.

The Richest MLB Teams

There’s big money in Major League Baseball, and according to Forbes, 20 MLB teams are worth more than a staggering 1 billion dollars! The top five MLB teams are…

  • New York Yankees: $6 billion
  • Los Angeles Dodgers: $4.07 billion
  • Boston Red Sox: $3.9 billion
  • Chicago Cubs: $3.8 billion
  • San Francisco Giants: $3.5 billion

Who Are The Founding MLB Teams?

In 1876, the founding MLB teams were as follows:

  • Philadelphia Athletics
  • Mutual of New York
  • Hartford Dart Blues
  • Boston Red Stockings
  • Chicago White Stockings
  • Cincinnati Red Stockings
  • St. Louis Brown Stockings
  • Louisville Grays

The Bottom Line

Since its inception, MLB has gained significant momentum, and it has fast become one of the most popular sports in the world.

With roughly 30 teams still packing out the stadiums every game, there’s no indication that our love for MLB is going away anytime soon!
